Ideal dairy cows that excel in health CRV making rapid progress in health and efficiency improvement The index run of April 2017 illustrates the rapid progress CRV is making in breeding bulls that boost herd efficiency and health. In the black-and-white segment, Danno, Esperanto and Empire are causing a stir. Rody is an impressive rising star in the red-and-whites and many daughters of former InSire Top bulls are producing their first milk. Breeding efficient and healthy cows is a goal that perfectly reflects an age in which farmers aim to optimally utilise their farms’ production capacity using animals that are resilient and able to achieve high lifetime production. The April index run showcases a number of bulls exemplary of the progress being booked by CRV in these areas. These bulls also prove that outstanding production traits can be partnered with good fertility. Delta Bookem Danno (Bookem x Bolton, 384 NVI) is a wonderful example to lead the line-up. His daughters have improved his ratings for traits including milk production (+1542 kg), longevity (+551 days) and fertility (104). Danno is firmly in the saddle leading the field of black-and-white daughter proven bulls and is a great all-rounder scoring +8% for Better Life Health and +9% for Better Life Efficiency. His versatility is completed by an exceptionally high score for confirmation of 115, with 110 for udders and 115 for legs. Weelder Esperanto (Final x G-Force, 401 NVI) is the highest ranking InSire Top bull at the moment. Alongside impressive scores for Better Life Efficiency (+15%) and Better Life Health (+8%), Esperanto transmits beautiful conformation (113) with fantastic udders (112) and legs (111). Esperanto daughters produce plenty of milk (+1724 kg) and have the persistence for prolonged production. Their high longevity score of +858 days means they are productive for a year longer than average, as well as giving amazing fertility (104), udder health (105) and very healthy claws (107). Another top flight offering among the InSire top bulls is Weelder Empire (Bravo x G-Force, 366 NVI). Esperanto’s half brother scores extremely well for Better Life Efficiency (+14%) and Better Life Health (+12%) combining this with high components (+0.45% fat and +0.23% protein) and exceptionally good longevity (+944 days). Empire produces a slightly lighter-framed cow, that scores high across the board of health and fertility traits. Examples include wonderful udder health (109), claw health (109), fertility (104) and ketosis (105). Empire also makes the ideal bull for maiden heifers (calving ease 113). Healthy, fertile cows with Jupiler & daughters prove Vitesse’s quality Delta Jupiler (Amigo x Snowfever CD, 344 NVI) is a supreme example of a bull that breeds a healthy herd (+11%). He garners high scores for all elements of health including claw health (107), ketosis (104), calving ease (112) and udder health (109). Added to the fantastic fertility figures (107) it’s plain to see why Jupiler has all the ingredients necessary to breed ideal dairy cows. Cows that are efficient producers (+6%), with good milk production (+1126 kg) and a positive protein score (+0.04%). Jupiler also passes on outstanding conformation (111), with excellent udders (109) and legs (108). The daughters of popular InSire top bull AH Vitesse (Gravity x Jardin, 220 NVI) are coming into milk production and their performances are testimony to his qualities. With 988 daughters entering his production breeding values at once, Vitesse ranks very high for efficiency (+7%), high components (+0.27% fat and +0.11% protein) and notes remarkable scores for legs (109), claw health (109) and ketosis (105). Vitesse produces healthy cows (+5%) that mature late, with low feed consumption per kg milk. Red-and-white champions in longevity & daughters confirm qualities of Arroyo sons Colorado and Valentino Colorado and Valentino were already popular choices as InSire Top bulls. These two red-and-white bulls have gained their first daughter breeding values in this April index run and the figures speak volumes about their qualities. Aalshorst Rody takes pole position among the red-and-white marker tested bulls. He is a true champion in longevity, just like Rijnhof DG Spitfire. Scoring +16% for Better Life Efficiency makes Aalshorst Rody (Riverboy RF x Fanatic, 329 NVI) the absolute champion at converting feed into milk, with minimal losses. In addition, Rody ranks as the highest placed red-and-white InSire top bull. He transmits exceptionally high milk production (+1503 kg) and combines a low feed intake with extremely good longevity (+904 days). His healthy (+6%) daughters produce for more than a year longer than average, performing very well from excellent (109) and healthy udders (106). They also offer magnificent legs (108) and healthy claws (104). Rody is very suitable for use with maiden heifers (107). Rijnhof DG Spitfire (Riverboy RF x Supersire, 300 NVI) descends from a family of cows that excels in high lifetime production partnered with high scores for conformation. That heritage is reflected in Spitfire’s remarkable scores for these traits. He combines high milk production (+963 kg), with great longevity (+853 days), resulting in a high efficiency of +9%. Spitfire inherits healthy (+8%) cows with superlative (111), healthy udders (107) and claws (105). Delta Colorado’s (Arroyo x Lawn Boy Red, 232 NVI) breeding values demonstrate his worth as a bull that improves health (+6%) and conformation levels in a herd. A trio of top scores for udder (113), legs (109) and total (113) demonstrate Colorado’s impressive credentials. His daughters also boast very healthy udders (107) and claws (106). Delta Valentino (Arroyo x Kylian, 203 NVI) gives daughters blessed with fabulous legs (110) and udders (108). He also boosts efficiency (+5%) and the protein component (+0.13%) of the herd and his daughters produce from healthy udders (104). -ends-

The breeding programme that goes for gold Efficiency, components, health, conformation and fertility; CRV’s bulls are truly going for gold in August’s index run. In addition, many bulls are also achieving amazingly high scores for Better Life Health and Better Life Efficiency; breeding values that practical studies prove to lead to better performances and higher profitability. Danno, Browning, Antidote, Chuck and Nova Star are exemplary of bulls that place the bar high in breeding. Among black-and-white bulls, Delta Bookem Danno (Bookem x Bolton, 345 NVI) is the first to start making a name for himself. Although he still features on the list of genomic tested bulls, he was awarded his breeding values for conformation in this index run based on his daughters. And they catapult Danno directly to a fantastic score of 116 for total conformation, with 115 points for legs and 110 for udders. To accompany these super scores, Danno passes on good milk production (+1239 kg) with positive scores for protein (+0.09%) and outstanding manageability (Better Life Health +8%). Rating 107 for udder health, 110 for claw health and 103 for fertility, Danno provides a full package of benefits. These phenomenal results rank Danno alongside famous names such as Atlantic, Snowfever and G-Force. Following in their footsteps, Danno reigned for a lengthy period as CRV’s most popular InSire Top Bull. Black-and white that excel in efficiency Willem’s Hoeve R Browning (Snowman x Ramos, 329 NVI) is the highest daughter-tested black-and-white bull with a staggering conformation score of 118, rating 113 points for udders and feet & legs. Browning daughters produce a high volume of milk (+1725 kg) with great efficiency (Better Life Efficiency +9%) and have very healthy udders (108) and claws (111). One of Browning’s half-brothers is Willem’s Hoeve R Universe (Snowman x Goldwyn, 258 NVI). His daughters are milkers who partner high production (+2040 kg) with efficiency (+8%) and excellent longevity (+501 days). Similar to Browning, he transmits a fantastic type (113) with 108 for udders and 111 for legs. Taking silver in the rankings after Browning, is Delta Antidote (Augustus x Shottle, 309 NVI). Antidote produces daughters whose healthy udders (107) will efficiently (+13%) produce a lot of milk (+1069 kg milk) with a high fat content (+0.15%). They offer a fine confrontation (110) with very good udders (108) and legs (110). Antidote’s daughters benefit from healthy claws (106) and with a score of 105 for daughter fertility they become pregnant very easily. He also scores a good +7% for Better Life Health. Thanks to his bloodline, Peak Chuck (Supershot x Ransom, 301 NVI) is a versatile InSire Top Bull suitable for a range of cows. Scoring no less than +9% for Better Life Health and +11% for Better Life Efficiency, he can be classified as a great all-rounder. As well as giving his offspring impressive milk production (+1369 kg), Chuck’s inheritance pattern results in exceptionally high longevity (+868 days) and very healthy udders (107) and claws (105). This American Supershot son also gives amazing udders (108). All these favourable traits combine to make Chuck an appealing addition to CRV’s portfolio of bulls. If you want efficient milking (+13%) then look no further than Delta Concert (Crescendo x G-Force, 299 NVI). He passes on sky high production (+1816 kg) and partly thanks to this trait, this InSire Top Bull achieves a towering Inet (€ 377). Concert’s daughters inherit a very high longevity (+644 days) from their sire, with healthy udders (104) and claws (104). A great foundation to accomplish long lifetime production. With +0.20% protein, Delta Alonso (Atlantic x Shottle, 227 NVI) represents a genuine boost to protein contents. His daughters are efficient producers (+7%) who offer excellent udders (108) and legs (110). Alonso’s package also contains a good figure of 104 for fertility and a very high score for claw health. This takes his health score to +7%. High lifetime production from red-and-white InSire Top Bulls American Nova Star (Delegate x Passe, 289 NVI) combines high milk production with outstanding protein inheritance (+0.09%) and magnificent conformation (112). Added to high longevity of +707 days, his score for efficiency is admirable (+7%). Very healthy (108) and good (111) udders can also be expected from Nova Star. American Carnival (Jester rf x Try rf, 259 NVI) is another InSire Top Bull who passes on superb conformation (113). Particularly striking are the scores for udder (111) and legs (110). His descendants will produce plenty of milk (+945 kg) with high protein contents (+0.09%). Cows that combine beauty and milk in abundance. -ends-

Fleckvieh bulls show their power to support efficient and easy milk production The economic situation in the dairy industry demands bulls that support production efficiency and strengthen the health of the herd. Bulls like Walk, Epinal, Wobbler and Raldi set the standard in this field and give farmers what they need to breed a profitable herd with cows that are easy to manage. Efficiency boost The number one available Fleckvieh bull is Walk (Watt x Reumut, 147 gGZW). This InSire Top Bull from CRV is the absolute champion for production efficiency (+14%) and a real udder specialist (124). On top of this great package he has fantastic scores for fitness traits (FIT 124 and Better Life Health +9%) and longevity (135). Thanks to this combination, daughters of Walk will be capable of very high lifetime productions and will be a pleasure to work with. Epinal (Everest x Sampro, 135 gGZW) is another high ranking InSire Top Bull that transmits lots of milk (+1413 kg) with great efficiency (+9%) and excellent conformation. Epinal daughters will be cows with very good muscularity, udders and feet and legs. Profitable and easy to work with Daughters descended from Wobbler (Watnox x Mandela, 135 gGZW) are great producers. This explains why Wobbler’s breeding value for milk production has jumped from +869 kg to +1,128 kg in the August index run. The efficiency of milk production is also good (+8%). Wobbler breeds cows with mid-sized frames, good udders (107) and good feet and legs (106) with every strong claws. Scoring +7% for health, the cows are easy to manage. Daughters of Raldi (Rau x Poldi,129 gGZW) progress greatly in milk production as they grow older. Daughters in the second lactation produce on average +1315 kg of milk compared with the first lactation. Raldi daughters also stand out for their very high longevity (125) and excellent type with fantastic udders (124). Rating scores of +8% for efficiency and +8% for health, Raldi is a bull that makes an unmissable contribution to modern Fleckvieh herds. -ends-

Progeny and demo groups in the spotlights at ‘Herd to your heart’ Seven progeny groups and three demo groups were presented to the public at the CRV event ‘Herd to Your Heart’ in Zwolle on 11 June. Here is the report. Delta Alonso: protein-rich health Although Delta Alonso has not yet received his breeding value, the progeny group of this Atlantic son made quite an impression at the CRV event. Alonso presented a highly uniform, still young and very appealing group of heifers. These cows are not too big and possess a striking level of balance as well as a strong upper build. Their mid-sections are somewhat closed and their rump is nicely sloped. Alonso’s legwork is strong on paper and was reflected well by these heifers. Their locomotion is strong on very healthy hooves and their udders are firmly attached with beautiful teat placement. Apart from his excellent protein content, Alonso is also known as a bull that transmits plenty of health: his Better Life Health score is +7%. Willem’s Hoeve R Browning: beautiful, with high milk production The progeny group of Browning (Snowman’s son from the famous Rita cow family owned by Dick, Anneke and Wim de Jong) was highly anticipated due to its conformation score of 114. Browning heifers produce a lot of milk; thanks to their height, width and space they are able to use their entire bodies: capacity, in other words. The most noticeable feature of the Browning-group were the udders: very high, wide and firmly attached. On top of that the udders are beautifully veined and have excellent teat placement. The main cow of the group impressed in particular: Willem’s Hoeve Superstar 1140. ‘She produces milk with her eyes shut,’ according to her carer and Browning breeder Dick de Jong. ‘Even after 250 days of lactation, she will still produce 38 litres a day.’ Dick also immediately spotted the daughters’ strong gait and dry legwork. ‘This is all due to the Ritas. Browning not only provides good production, he can also deliver a classifiers’ favourite. Bruchter Passe: best bull for legs After his debut at the HHH last December, Passe appeared again in Zwolle with a progeny group. The fresh second calf cows had clearly gained weight and had an excellent milking quality. In combination with high longevity, this production capacity ensured that Passe obtained a Better Life Efficiency score of a whopping +13%. Passe ’s four red-and-white and two black-and-white daughters showed very strong, hard frames with fine udders and correct teat placement. Legs are without a doubt Passe’s strongest feature: their hocks are a little more angled which ensures suppler leg use. It was all déjà vu to Henk Hemming, Passe’s breeder. ‘Passe’s dam also had a long stride – her hind legs would almost pass her forelegs.’ Delta G-Force: fat and protein champion G-Force showed second calf cows with a beautiful weight at the CRV event. These cows can handle their enormous fat and protein production due to considerable frame content, strong udders and fine legs. The development shown by the G-Force daughters between their first and second lactation is best described as late maturity. This is also shown in their production progression. The 1,500 G-Force daughters who are currently in their second lactation produce 600 kg of milk more than on their heifer list. In doing so their udders stay nicely attached and highly placed, long and beautifully veined. The G-Force daughters have proven to be supple (robot milking) cows, thanks to fine legwork and dry hocks. Cherokee van de Peul: a real all-rounder Cherokee has shown daughters before, but this time it was the third and fourth calf cows’ turn. These older cows impressed with their balance and uniformity – the six cows appeared to have been copied. Although they weren’t overly big, they had enormous rib cages and very functional rumps. The legs were strong as well and their beautifully veined udders with good teat placement were very well preserved. The six red-and-white cows by the son of Fender are further validation for many dairy farmers who have this reliable all-rounder on their insemination lists. Delta Atlantic: favourit of the public Almost a quarter of all visitors at the CRV event picked Atlantic’s progeny group as the most appealing. The couple with third and fourth calf daughters stood out thanks to their powerful and supple milking type. They are a highly uniform group of problem-free, healthy and strong working cows, boasting durable udders with precise central ligaments and fine teat placement. This health and longevity specialist has already produced 750,000 doses of semen, causing the prediction that he might become the new millionaire. Bouw Snowfever cd: from top genomics to impressive reliability Snowfever made his debut at the CRV event and impressed with his high-production, strong heifers. These heifers will end up producing 10,500 kg of milk on average during their first lactation. Snowfever’s full sister ended up producing 17,500 kg of milk during her second lactation. High milk production is a family trait. The daughters showed shallow udders with length, height and good teat placement. The younger Snowfever daughters also have beautiful withers, a long first rib, great body capacity , width and supple movement. Snowfever’s semen is available in limited amounts and although the fact that he carries CD restricts his use, the visitors of the CRV event still voted his group second best after Atlantic. Demo groups Demo group Fleckvieh: healthy dual-purpose breed A demo group of Fleckvieh crossbreds means a group of powerful, broad cows with an extra muscle and a powerful stride. The number of first inseminations with Fleckvieh semen was around 90,000 last year. Plenty of reason to showcase the daughters of Rumbo and Vitaly, two of the most popular Fleckvieh bulls. Apart from their looks, dairy farmers wax lyrical especially about their performance: strong udder health and high calving ease. Demo group MRIJ: problem-free with high added value Problem-free, sturdy cows with high protein percentages: these qualities summarise the MRIJ demo group in a single sentence. These six animals (including one black-and-white) were a mix of pure MRIJ and crossbreds, daughters
