The December 2013 index run shows that CRV’s young bulls maintain their excellent performance figures and a number of new bulls have also come into the picture. They all make a substantial contribution to breeding an efficient and healthy herd and even more so with the introduction of the new CRV breeding figures, Better Life Efficiency and Better Life Health.

The December 2013 index run is a special one as it coincides with the introduction of two new breeding figures from CRV: Better Life Efficiency and Better Life Health. All CRV bulls received a first score for these traits in this index run.

•  Better Life Efficiency indicates the extent to which a bull contributes to more efficient milk production. The more energy is converted into milk, the better it is for efficiency. The figure is expressed as a percentage.

• Better Life Health indicates the extent to which a bull contributes to a healthier herd. A high score means that a bull’s progeny will have a low rate of health problems such as mastitis, lameness, difficult calvings or failure to get in calf. This figure is also given as a percentage.

Further explanation of these figures can be found under ‘extra information’ at the bottom of this page.

Highly reliable black-and-white bulls
Well-known bulls like Delta Atlantic (+ 301 NVI), Delta Ammo (+ 222 NVI) and Newhouse Gofast (+235 NVI) now have hundreds of daughters. Thanks to their previous use as InSire (genomic) bulls they now have very reliable daughter-proven breeding values at a young age.  This fact makes the acceleration in breeding easy to see and it is reassuring that these bulls maintain a stable position in the highest level of the rankings. Delta Atlantic stands firmly on the top spot in the rankings and Gofast increases his already very high type score to an impressive 116. The first scores for Better Life Health and Better Life Efficiency for this trio show that these bulls clearly increase the efficiency and health of the herd (see table).

Delta Atlantic 512 93% +4% +10%
Delta Ammo 386 92% +8% +7%

Sons of Bertil transfer protein
A bull that obtained his first daughter proof in this run is Aurora Jeroen (Bertil x O-Man , 239 NVI). His daughters produce plenty of fat and protein (+125 kg) and they milk easily (+1,156 kg of milk, with a body condition score of 107) and with excellent milk solids (+0.20% fat and +0.17% protein). Jeroen has a sky-high production index (+ € 397 Inet), and his score for Better Life Efficiency is very high (+7 %). Jeroen daughters calve easily (106), have very good hoof health (108) and a good type score (108).

Hennie 44 (s. Jeroen)

Black-and-white InSires for efficient production
A striking InSire (genomic bull) is Vero Anchorman (Hunter x Goli , +316 NVI). He inherits excellent milk production (+1,401 kg of milk), with +101 kg of fat and protein and great efficiency (+9). Using Anchorman will lead to a healthier herd (+3%)  because he has very good scores for udder health (106), calving ease (105), and hoof health (104). Anchorman is also a real udder specialist with 113 points for udder and 113 points for total score.

Newhouse Jasper (G -Force x Cricket , +319 NVI ) is another InSire bull to use if you’re looking for a healthier herd (+5%). This is not surprising given his excellent scores for udder health (108), fertility (104), calving ease (109), and hoof health (103). Jasper comes from the same cow family as the top bull Newhouse Gofast and he is a real transmitter of milk solids (+0.22% fat and +0.23% protein). Combined with good milk production (+812 kg), he transmits +104 kg fat and protein. His score for Better Life Efficiency is very high (+8 %) and he also sires daughters with excellent type, offering a total score of 111 and an udder score of 111.

AH Vitesse (Gravity x Jardin , +302 NVI ) is one of those InSire bulls with the beautiful combination of high milk production (+1,135 kg ), with high milk solids (+104 kg fat and protein). These high scores are very beneficial to the overall herd health (+7%).

RED AND WHITE

Breeding for polled at top level
Given the public debate about dehorning, it is good to see that breeding for polled red-and-white Holsteins has reached the top level.
With more than 260 milking daughters, Fasna Asterix P (Lawn Boy x Canvas , +197 NVI) is doing well. He belongs to the absolute top and delivers highly efficient production cows (+9%) with very healthy feet (108). Calves by Asterix are also born very easily (110).

Extra information

Better Life Efficiency
As a general rule, productivity combined with longevity leads to high efficiency. A bull with a score of +5% transmits 50% of this effect to his offspring. This generates a financial gain of €250 per cow life in an average herd.
Milk yield and longevity are particularly important in calculating Better Life Efficiency, but persistency, maturity rate, fertility and weight are also taken into account in the calculation.

Better Life Health
Using bulls with a high score for Better Life Health has the advantage that the herd becomes easier to manage and that cows stand a better chance of ageing healthily.
Better Life Health is calculated on the basis of a bull’s genetic capacity in terms of udder health, fertility, claw health, calving ease and calf vitality.
A bull with a score of +5% transmits 50% of this effect to his offspring. This generates a financial gain of €70 per cow per year in an average herd.
