The ‘Best Herd of the Netherlands’ owned by: the Winter family in Vriezenveen

The Winter family in Vriezenveen are the proud owners of the ‘Best Herd of the Netherlands’. After months of fierce competition in the qualifying rounds, the final was held on 11 June at the CRV event ‘A Herd to Your Heart’. The Winter family was announced as the winner and their herd was crowned in the presence of thousands of visitors to the event.

On 11 June, thousands of visitors flocked to the CRV event ‘A Herd to Your Heart’ organised in the IJsselhallen, Zwolle. One of the show highlights was the announcement of the winners of the ‘Best Herd of the Netherlands’ contest. The battle started in March with 115 contestants. The six remaining finalists were presented to the audience in Zwolle, with a selection of their cattle. Jan and Tiny Winter, and their family, were the overjoyed winners. They run a farm with efficiently producing cows at the peak of health, and devote a lot of attention to good longevity.

This was the first time a contest to find the ‘Best Herd of the Netherlands’ was organised. Party due to the massive public interest for the contest, it can be considered an indicator of what farmers and interested members of the public see as important points in today’s dairy farming sector.


Young Herd Manager of the Year

To encourage attention for sustainable dairy farming, the CRV event also hosted the final of: ‘Young Herd Manager of the Year’. In the final, three young farmers presented their visions on dairy farming and their perspectives of the future of their own herd. The votes of the professional jury and the public resulted in Thijs Neutel (30) from Saaksum (Gr.) being announced the lucky winner.

The key notes of his personal ambition according to Thijs are: ‘to become the best dairy farmer in the Netherlands – both technically and financially – and to earn the respect of the surroundings and society for my sustainable, animal-friendly approach to farming’.
Winning the ‘Young Herd Manager of the Year’ award has certainly given Thijs Neutel’s ambitions a positive boost in the right direction.
